What is Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic tests help physicians diagnose and detect diseases, injuries, and other medical conditions. There are five main reasons why a diagnostic test may be performed: establishing a diagnosis, screening for a disease, providing prognostic information for patients with established diseases, monitoring therapy through either benefits or side effects, and testing to confirm if a person is free from disease.
Types of Diagnostic Testing
There are many different types of diagnostic testing a physician can perform in order to properly diagnose and treat an injury or disease. Electromyography, Nerve Conduction Testing, Diagnostic Ultrasounds, Vascular Testing, and Digital X-Rays are some of the tests that OC Wellness offers.
Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Testing (NCV)
EMG is a diagnostic test that helps assess the health of muscles and nerves. EMG measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of muscles, which helps diagnose muscle abnormalities. EMG is often performed in people who have shown signs of muscle weakness and is helpful in diagnosing muscle abnormalities such as muscular dystrophy, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, peripheral nerve damage, ALS, and disc herniation. NCV is done to find damage to the peripheral nervous system. NCV is often used to determine nerve problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome or Guillain Barre syndrome.
A Diagnostic Ultrasound, also known as sonography, captures live images from inside the body through high frequency sound waves. Ultrasounds may be used when a patient is having pain, swelling, or other symptoms that require an internal view of organs such as your bladder, ovaries, kidneys, liver, or thyroid.
Vascular Testing is key to determining if our bodies’ circulatory system is functioning properly. As our body ages, unhealthy changes can occur in blood vessels which can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, varicose veins, and blood clots. A vascular ultrasound is one way to generate images of the blood flow through the veins and is a painless way to diagnose cardiovascular disease, disorders of the heart and blood vessels.
Digital X-Rays are used to diagnose a variety of things such as bone fractures, arthritis, scoliosis, tumors, fluid in the lungs, and infections. X-Rays are a time efficient way of determining medical problems.
